Whales

I have a tattoo of a whale on my lower back.

So naturally I was interested when I learned that one of the upcoming spoonflower design contests is a whale theme.

I drew some pink whales. And played around with some abstract photos of soap bubbles.

And this: pano

Plus this: 002

Plus some fiddling with the spoonflower color editor (because the contest included a restriction to a specific palette of five colors)

Became this: 2962417_rrrrpano_ed

I think they’re cute. 🙂 I have no delusions of winning the contest in competition with professional graphic designers with access to photoshop, etc. But I like to enter the spoonflower design contests because it’s a spur to creative exercise. I wouldn’t have spent part of my day off drawing pink whales otherwise and I rather enjoyed myself.

S just got a brand new iphone! It didn’t have anywhere to live, so we dug out one of my many zipper pouch creations from the drawer. This one is padded, so there is a little extra protection, plus the fabric is some from spoonflower that I designed using S’s flower drawings. Perfect! It makes me glad to see it in use and not just sitting in a drawer.

I can post these pictures now.

I made this cute little goat-y pouch for my sister for Christmas, but I hadn’t had a chance to give it to her yet, so I didn’t want to post pictures in case she saw them here.  But now she has received her gift and I can share with the world! A napkin with knit-pattern fabric, posed with yummy apple butter that K gave us for Christmas.

A sailboat zipper pouch that I made to exactly fit a book.  I was worried that I mis-measured, but it fits like a glove!

A yummy lavender eye pillow in spoonflower’s lovely silk/cotton blend printed with flowers that S drew.

Spoonflower.  I am addicted.  And I am especially really happy with how the flower fabric turned out.  It was a lot of work to cut out flowers from S’s doodles and scan them all and then edit the files for a satisfactory finished arrangement.  But it was totally worth it!  Look how awesome!  And I think it’s quite lovely that S was willing to let me take scissors to some of her marker art so that this fabric could become a collaboration between the two of us.  I gave the eye pillow to her, of course.

If you’re ordering yourself something from spoonflower, that silk blend fabric is really nice to touch and has a glow-y sheen to it.  It’s a little sheer, so I backed it with a plain white cotton to make the pillow sturdier, but the texture is absolutely perfect for an eye pillow.  The purple knit is one of my designs, too, printed on basic cotton.  The sailboat fabric was a thrift shop treasure find.

Now I am working on a design with some spirals that S drew, trying to learn about pattern repeats in fabric design.  It’s challenging!  We shall see where I get to.  I’m not ready to order a sample yet.  Also, I cut up one of my marker drawings and have been playing with that in a pattern that I’m calling “caterpillars.”  So.  More to come…

Here’s something I just made with some of my spoonflower fabric! I got this sweatshirt at Goodwill a few days ago.  It’s big and warm and comfy, but it had a stain right in the middle of it.  So, I made a little quilted octagon patch thingy and sewed it on!  The bright pink of this fabric is a great contrast with the black sweatshirt.

I have been sewing a lot lately.  Mostly little lined zipper pouches.  I’ll post some pictures of those soon.

I have been playing with spoonflower lately.  It’s so fun!  I uploaded some of my photos and have been inventing fabric with them, although I only actually ordered one of my designs to test so far, so that’s the only one that’s actually for sale.  When I get a couple more uploaded, I will order a swatch packet, but I’m not quite ready to do that yet.  But I’ve found that close-up photos of my knitting make really cool abstract designs when you tile them. Check it out! http://www.spoonflower.com/collections/24279 I can’t wait to actually get some of those in my hands to play with on the sewing machine.

But anyway, I am posting right now because I was just reading the spoonflower blog and I was really inspired by this project they posted a few days ago.  It’s for a custom lampshade made by gluing fabric over a white lampshade base.  This looks super easy to do, all you need is fabric and adhesive, and I love the finished product. Lamps and lampshades are such happy things, making soft warm light and cozy lit spaces.  Here’s the link. http://blog.spoonflower.com/2012/09/custom-fabric-lampshade.html

You can have this company make custom fabric with your own design on it.  Your own drawings or photos or whatever.  Is that not the most fabulous idea ever?  So perfect for any craftsperson.  Such fun gifts.  What about a wedding dress?  Awesomeness.  Awesomeness, I tell you.

I wants it.

SPOONFLOWER

So, yeah.  Now that I have an etsy shop, I like this idea even more.  I mean, I can justify creating fabulous custom fabric because it’s a business venture.

I should put more than one item up for sale in my shop. 🙂
