Life is a little crazy right now! S and I have been sorting through absolutely everything we own so that we could clear out space for my brother to move into our second bedroom. We have opened up every single drawer, cupboard, or box in the entire house, and we have emptied out most of those compartments and evaluated each item inside them. We have donated a ton of stuff to thrift stores. I already brought one bag of books to the used bookstore to sell for credit, and I have six more boxes of books waiting to be gone through. We had so many scarves and hats and mittens that we filled an entire garbage bag with ones to donate, and we still have two drawers full that we elected to keep. The bedroom is empty and ready for my brother to move in tomorrow, all that’s left in there is furniture and some of his stuff that he already dropped off. If you saw my living room, you would think we were hoarders, though, because there is still a rather large untidy pile of stuff needing to be sorted! But most of it has a plan, thank goodness. We will be putting a few things into my brother’s storage unit, getting rid of a significant portion more, and the rest will find a home in the closet or in a plastic storage bin.

It has been both stressful and really refreshing to sort through all our stuff like this. It is a thousand little decisions, what to do with each small object, each article of clothing, each book, each piece of fabric, each skein of yarn, but our closet has never looked so amazingly organized, the space under the kitchen sink is no longer a pit of despair, and we now have space for three people to sit down at our table, instead of just two!

One side effect of all of this is that we have found lots of things that were buried and forgotten about in the back of a cupboard or the bottom of a basket, and that includes a ton of unfinished knitting and crochet projects. The inevitable UFOs that every fiber artist knows all too well. So many projects get set aside because you get bored or frustrated with them, or because you started working on another project that you’re more excited about. But now, these projects are rediscovered and newly interesting. Time has erased the boredom or the frustration and inspiration can return!

So, here is a project that has been sitting unfinished for a very long time, and is now finally completed! It’s a wall-hanging made mostly from unraveled sweaters. One of the sweaters is very sentimental to me because I used to wear it all the time when S and I first started dating fourteen years ago. The sweater eventually got very ratty, but I had unraveled it and kept the yarn, and now I finally have this art on my wall where a small part of that sweater is preserved.

the story of a hat

Yesterday I finished another UFO that had been sitting around, a knit hat.  There are still lots and lots of them lingering in drawers and crammed into bags and boxes, but I am slowly making progress.  I remember the exact moment when I started knitting this hat.  It was when we were living in Rutland, two years ago!  I was sitting in S’s office, either working on homework or having just finished another project.  She had a little reading nook in there with blankets and floor cushions.  I didn’t want to get up, so I just grabbed some yarn and needles that happened to be sitting next to me and started knitting.  I think I finished about half of it right then, but inspiration didn’t stick with me, obviously.  And then two years went by!

Well, here it is, finally finished.  It’s up on etsy becasue it’s too small for my big ol’ head.  Click picture for listing.

All this soft little scarf that S made needed was to have its ends tucked in and a button sewn on, but it was sitting in a drawer for a long time waiting for that finishing touch.  It took me about 5 minutes to finish it off.  Maybe even less than that.  The longest part was choosing the right button.  And now it’s done, and up for sale on etsy!  It’s S’s third item up there, out of 60.  The rest I made.  Cuz I’m sort of always making things, addictively…

🙂

I have to take a break from the UFOs for a little while now, though, because I have some custom orders to turn my attention to.  S’s sister wants a goat for one of her friends’ babies, and the person who bought Mim the Magical Space Ermine wants a mate for her.  Isn’t that exciting?  I feel really flattered and warm-fuzzy-ized.

UFOs (unfinished objects in craft lingo) are a problem for almost every craftperson.  They’re the projects that end up sitting  in a box somewhere with a ball of yarn still attached.  The ones where inspiration dried up, or the ones that got interrupted by a more exciting project.  That last reason is usually my biggest problem.  Whenever I get new yarn, I want to start making something out of it right away.  But anyway, for whatever reason, those unfinished projects can really start to take up space.  And it’s kind of depressing to see them sitting in a drawer all the time.

So, anyway, I have been considering my UFOs lately.  And I decided that there was no reason that they had to become the finished project that they were originally intended to be.  Maybe I’ve had this same revelation before, and I ‘d just forgotten about it.  Or maybe it really is the new idea that it feels like.  It led me to some inspiration, anyway!

Here are two creatures that I made this past week.  The first one was created from something that was meant to be a purse, and the second from an unfinished baby blanket.  And I’m really happy with both of them!  So, yay for renewed inspiration and creativity!

UFOs

A friend of mine mentioned her UFOs (unfinished objects) on her facebook status yesterday.  She said that she’d been finishing some of them.  Good for her!  🙂

I have this one particular UFO that I feel really, really bad that I haven’t finished.  It was supposed to be a Christmas present for my mother-in-law, like, four years ago.  I had it almost done by the big day, but then I got frustrated.  I was trying to sew a fabric backing onto a crocheted afghan, and the fabric got all wrinkled and was pulling the crocheted part into a non-square shape.  I was sewing by hand, too, which takes much longer than the machine, of course.

So I put the blanket away, meaning to come back to it in a little while.

And here we are, a few years later.

S and I have been sorting through some boxes and closets and such places where abandoned objects gather.  We’ve got a huge pile of stuff in the living room waiting to go to thrift stores and the used book store.

And the blanket project is out in the open again, eyeing me.
